BPP is gone but Sibyl is at the Print Studio in downtown SD

Bay Park Press has closed; Jim has retired but continues work on his own prints at his home studio; Sibyl is at a new location downtown. The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, where Sibyl has been Artist-in-Residence for many years, has opened a downtown branch, the Athenaeum Art Center (AAC), in the Bread & Salt building in Barrio Logan in 2016. The AAC houses both a large Art Studio space where Athenaeum Art School classes are held, and the fabulous Print Studio with its Rotunda Press that Sibyl now manages.

The Rotunda Athenaeum Music & Arts Library Press, or Rotunda Press for short, was made possible by a generous donation of equipment by Dr. Edwin Petko of Los Angeles. Dr. Petko wanted to move his extensive collection of presses that had been on loan to UC Riverside to an institution that would continue using them to teach printmaking and letterpress to future generations.

His timing was perfect as the Athenaeum had just secured space in the Bread & Salt building for the new downtown branch of the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library School of the Arts, with space specifically designated for a Print Studio. His marvelous donation includes two Asbern relief presses, manufactured in Germany in the 1970s, and a Columbian Seggi hand iron press, made in Edinburgh in the 1860s, and an Imperial hand iron press, from the late 1800s. Over 20 cabinets of type were also donated.

In addition, Bay Park Press donated more type and equipment after its closing in May 2017. To complete the studio’s array of equipment, a Griffin etching press was acquired.

Please come visit us at the Print Studio and take classes with Sibyl, Morgan Miller III, and other fine teachers, many of whom are former BPP members, exhibiting artists and interns.

We also have Open Studio hours at the Print Studio on Thursdays & Sundays from 1:00 to 4:00  p.m.  Those familiar with printmaking and letterpress are welcome to continue working on their own projects using the wonderful array of equipment and resources now available there.

The Athenaeum Art Center is in the Bread & Salt building at 1955 Julian Avenue, San Diego, CA 92113.

Ms. Daniela Kelly, Bilingual Manager Athenaeum Art Center, is on site there on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 10:00 a.m.to 4:00 p.m. & by appointment.

Please visit ljathenaeum.org for more information on art school classes offered at the AAC.
